Lancaster, PA - The EPRU Final Four for Single School and U-19 Club teams took place on an overcast Mother’s Day Sunday. The Hempfield and Warwick Rugby Clubs of the Susquehanna District teamed up to host the event on their beautiful pitches at Centerville Elementary School.

Single School Semi-finals
The event would kick-off with the single school semi-finals. On field one the #1 seed, St. Joe’s Prep from the Southern District, would take on the #4 seed, State College of the Susquehanna District, while #2 seed Unionville of the Brandywine District would face #3 seed St. Gregory’s from the Northern District on Field two. Both matches were very tight affairs that were still up for grabs until the final whistle. State College would score early on St. Joe’s Prep to take a 5-0 lead, but Prep was able to respond to tie the game at 5-5 before the half. St. Joe’s came out storming in the second half, putting up two converted trys to build a 19-5 lead. State College refused to quit and scored a converted try to get within one score. State College continued to pressure, but The Prep defense was able to stand strong and prevent any more scoring to take the semi-final 19-12.

2008 girls team

Currently, USA Rugby houses over 100 girls' club based high school age level registered programs in various states throughout the U.S. While the count for club rugby at the high school age level has increased over the last few years, the number of state high school associations sponsoring girls' rugby as a varsity sport is zero.

With USA Rugby's overall goal of providing its members with the maximum number of rugby opportunities possible, the push for girls varsity high school rugby is imperative. Creating interscholastic (varsity) girls' rugby not only expands opportunity beyond youth rugby, but also feeds directly into the growth of NCAA women's rugby at the intercollegiate level.

The National Federation of High School Associations regulates, compiles information and serves as the governing body for all high school varsity sports that are recognized by State High School Associations. According to the data and terminology employed by all other high school varsity sports, there is no girls' "high school rugby" in the U.S. There is however, some very successful and vibrant, "high school club rugby" or "high school age rugby" in the United States. The current informational campaign to assist in the creation of interscholastic (varsity) team for girls aims to improve these numbers of girls' varsity high school rugby teams sponsored by state high school associations.
